一般以 125 日（俗稱半年線）、 200 日、 250 日（俗稱年線）、 26 週（俗稱半年線）及 52 週（俗稱年線）為市場價格變動週期。 年線是超級大戶、炒手們操作股票時參考的依據。 歐美股市技術分析所採用的長期移動平均線多以 200 日為準，且美國投資專家葛蘭碧（ Granville ）經研究與試驗後，認為 200 日移動平均線最具代表性。
長期移動平均線由於取樣週期太長無法事前偵測多空方向，只能當作研判大盤長線多空方向是否已經反轉之用。至於 10 年線和 20 年線等的超長期移動平均線，因為用到的機率不高，加上籌碼稀釋的效應，通常是因為市場過度解讀而造成心理面的影響居多，在實際操作的參考意義較低。
為了顯示短、中、長期投資大眾的平均成本，我們應同時選擇這幾種趨勢，不能因為個人習慣或愛好厚此薄彼。許多投資人擔心主力騙線而設定一些不常見的均線， EX ： MA7 、 MA9 、 MA13 或 MA27 …等等，這是沒有必要的。因為①只要是短期波動，主力就有故意騙線的可能，但就中長期來說，主力是比較難操縱股價、②均線主要是代表平均成本與股價的趨勢方向，所以在使用均線時，必須同時考慮短中長期等三種趨勢，而不必特意去設定一些不常見的參數。
短、中期移動平均線的作用主要在於看通道（即趨勢的方向）。 例如：日線的 MA5 、 MA10 、 MA22 、 MA33 等。 股票操作首重趨勢的判斷，通道描述的是趨勢的發展方向，持有上升通道的股票會隨著時間而獲利，持有下降通道的股票會隨著時間而虧損。 在標準的上升通道中，股價＞ MA5 ＞ MA10 移动平均线MA的优缺点及助涨助跌作用 ＞ MA22 ，亦即，均線呈多頭排列，股價回跌到均線附近時會產生支撐的作用；而在標準的下跌通道中，情形正好相反，當股價反彈至均線附近時會產生壓力的作用。
